Can FL Studio Record Audio? [FL Studio Tutorial]

FL Studio is a great DAW for creating electronic music. But can you record audio with it? Yes you can, and this is how.

FL Studio started out as a simple tool for making beats. Later the program could do more and became a full-fledged Digital Audio Workstation (DAW).

The emphasis in FL Studio is still on making beats with the step sequencer. But did you know you can also record audio in FL Studio? It works like this.

How to record audio in FL Studio

To record audio in FL Studio it’s best to use an external audio interface. You can hook up your microphone or synthesizer to this device and record it straight into the computer.

Alternatively, you can use a microphone with a USB-connection. In this example, I record my voice with a USB microphone.

Step 1. Start FL Studio and open the Audio Settings (Options > Audio settings).

Record audio in FL Studio.

Step 2. Here you can select the correct Input for your microphone. In my case I’m recording straight into the computer via USB. Therefore I select FL Studio ASIO.

💡 Note. A dedicated audio interface sounds betters and produces less audio delay (latency). Invest in a good audio interface if you’re serious about recording audio. For instance one of the PreSonus AudioBox-series.

Step 3. Close the Audio Settings Window and open the Mixer.

Step 4. Select an empty mixer track. For instance, mixer channel 2.

Select a mixer channel in FL Studio.

Step 5. Select the correct input for the Mic. Now say something in the mix and check if FL Studio is receiving audio.

Step 6. Arm the mixer track for recording audio.

Step 7. Close the mixer and go to the Playlist Editor.

Step 8. Press Record and start singing, rapping or talking.

Press Record and start singing, rapping or talking.

💡 Note. Put on a headphone and turn off your speakers if other instruments are playing during recording. Otherwise, the mic will pick them up.

Step 9. There you go, FL Studio has recorded the audio and made a new audio track in the Playlist Editor.

Step 10. Double click on the audio file and click on Normalize, to crank up the volume if you want to.

Double click on the audio track and click on Normalize.

You can disarm the mixer track (step 6) and deselect the Mic Input (Step 5) now, if you don’t need the microphone anymore.

Recording Audio in FL Studio is really easy

Recording audio in FL Studio isn’t difficult at all. As long as you set-up the correct Audio Driver and Inputs.

In practice, though, you’ll find that a regular sound card produces audio delay. Therefore, invest in a professional audio interface and a good microphone for the best results.

Good luck and happy producing!
